| What are you planning on using it for? In general, plywood is stronger and more durable than chip board. I really don't know of any disadvantages of using plywood, just advantages. Chipboard swells when it gets any moisture on it. Plywood though is is more expensive. I think it is worth it. |

Chip board, referred to as OSB in the building industry, is cheaper than plywood. It is true that swelling can occur if exposed to water, but the money saved is tremendous and the strength is as good as plywood in my opinion. Just make sure that a good housewrap is applied, such as Tyvek. |

| They all have different pros and cons. In europe the term osb board is generally used to describe chip board with larger wood chips, making it stronger than regular flat faced chip board but cheaper than plywood. Making it ideal for bigger constructions. As previous posters stated it all comes down to what you want to do. Also keep in mind the variety of plywood, all suited for different uses. |

You need to tell us what the application will be before we can evaluate "pros" and "cons". Exterior? Interior? Wet? Dry?

Plywood is great for electric guitars such as the gibson 335, although it has a poorer sound quality then spruce or cedar" when used on acusticals ",it does makes for a good electric guitar (semi hollow body). That being because your sound is amplified through pick ups.
It last for an eternity and is virtually indestructible and will gain value as years go by.
The wood of today is not as the wood of yesterday, WW1 and the chemicals used destroyed the growing season and effected the grain of the woods, so if you can find a guitar thats pre 1916 you have a gold mine.
A guitar is only as good as the person who makes it, I knew a older gentleman who died in 1970 at the age of 86 who would comb the city parks with a hand saw and cut peices of wood and let them dry(age) for years and then produce quality violions and lute's that doctors would purchase from him.
He didn't know his talent.
He made his own varnish and the tools he needed to to make an instrument fit in a shoe box.
This man was a professionaly luthieur that was trained in Pittsburgh Pa.
at a place called Lomakin Music
He would tune the woon of the instrument to a "C" by scrapping it and then struck the wood with his finger untill he got the tone that he wanted.
This sounds like an unbeliveable story, but it is the truth. |

| Plywood can be a lot stronger than other wooden materials of the same thickness as the grain is facing a different direction on each layer/ply . however depending on which wood you used you will recieve different outcome, e.g. canadian maple is used to make strong yet durable professional skateboards for example , whereas pine is used around the home . |
