| Question: Does anyone know how rice pattern china is made? This is the china which has translucent "bubbles" which look as though graqins of rice have been enbedded in the china and then vaporized. |

Originally the rice grains were pushed into the wet clay of the thrown dish and when fired the rice burned out.....the glaze which was applied later filled in the "holes" and left the translucent "spots" which formed the pattern. Now it is all automated. It is a century's old technique.
I've tried to duplicate the technique and it is quite easy, but not always consistant. I guess that is a secret the ancients held on to. |
