Why are buttons of men's jacket &/or blazer located on the right side and the buttonholes are on the leftside, while for the women's it is the opposite? Is this a way to distinguish one wear from the other?

| Long ago I read men's clothing is lapped so the right hand can be quickly inserted to draw a concealed weapon. Women got what was "left." |

| I had read that back when clothing was really elaborate that women needed help dressing because it was so crazy, and the manufactures made clothing so it would be "right" for the person dressing the lady, but men dressed themselves and they have just kept the buttoning the same. |
