For many centuries, a mixture of a soluble iron salt with an extract of tannin was used as a writing ink and is the basis of modern blue-black inks. |

I suppose the body of the tip is heated so that the metal will expand. As soon as the ball is inserted, it is cooled to room temperature so that it will shrink again. This is similar to the principle of bolting airplane parts.
